Some of my best Christmas presents in 2023 were books.
My favorite so far is The Covenant of Water, set in Kerala, my home state in India. I also got lost, in a good way, in the works of Ottessa Moshfegh—her character descriptions of people staring into the void and beginning to sense that the void is staring back are uniquely powerful. This was also the year I finally read a Stephen King book (The Shining first because Here's Johnny), and I can see the appeal.
If you're looking for optimism in the autumn and upcoming winter months, I recommend:
The Covenant of Water by Abraham Verghese
The Humans by Matt Haig.
Here’s a list of everything I’ve read, so far this year during my downtime. If you live in Dublin, you can find them all at Hodges & Figgis.
